The Tour
The University of West Georgia opened in 1906 as the Fourth District Agricultural & Mechanical School, one of a set of farm schools the 1906 Perry Act planted in Georgia's congressional districts. The state chose the old Bonner plantation west of Carrollton, and the school grew into West Georgia College (1933) and finally the University of West Georgia. This walk begins on Front Campus Drive among the oldest buildings on the property — a pre-Civil-War plantation house and the first A&M classroom building — and ends at the modern Coliseum that anchors the Wolves' athletic corner.
University of West Georgia Campus Tour is a self-guided walking tour of Carrollton, built around its campus side.
The walk covers 5 stops over about 1.2 miles and roughly 1 hour, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.
What you'll see
This walk moves through more than a century of West Georgia history, from before the school existed to its Division I present. On the old front campus, a white-columned plantation house from the 1840s still stands. The state founded a farm school here in 1906. Nearby is the oldest surviving classroom building from those A&M school days, a reminder that the first students worked the fields between lessons.
The best story on the route belongs to the Kennedy Chapel. It started out as a small Episcopal church in downtown Carrollton. After President Kennedy was assassinated, the church was moved to campus and rededicated in his memory, and Robert F. Kennedy came to Carrollton in 1964 for the occasion. The route continues past Ingram Library, named for the president who led the school for 27 years and home to UWG's archives. You'll also see the Coliseum, the arena that has held the Wolves' basketball crowds, and concerts too, since 2009.
The walk is about 1.2 miles on campus sidewalks and takes roughly an hour. Spring and fall weekdays feel the most lively, and weekends are quieter and easier for parking. The Georgia Roam app tells each stop's story as you arrive.
