The Tour

Dalton State College opened in September 1967 as Dalton Junior College, tucked into the wooded foothills of Northwest Georgia's carpet-and-textile country. Four original buildings have grown into a full four-year campus, home of the Roadrunners, with a regional heritage museum at its heart. This walk visits the founding buildings and the halls that carry the college's story.

Dalton State College Campus Tour is a self-guided walking tour of Dalton, built around its campus side. It's one of 6 Georgia Roam tours in Dalton — each a different route through the city, on your own schedule.

The walk covers 6 stops over about 0.5 miles and roughly 45 minutes, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.

What you'll see

This walk starts where Dalton State started. In September 1967 a handful of new buildings on a wooded hillside above I-75 took in 524 students, and several of those buildings still stand at the center of campus. You'll see the original student center, the lone classroom-and-science building that every first-year student passed through, and the first administration and library building.

The story then moves forward. A classroom hall renamed on the college's 20th anniversary honors the wife of its first president. The library houses the Bandy Heritage Center for Northwest Georgia, whose archive of photographs and documents preserves the story of the region's carpet and textile towns, and it hosts public exhibits and lectures. The walk ends at Bandy Gymnasium, finished in 1968 and now home court for Roadrunners who have won national titles. Watch for the bell tower rising over the central quad along the way.

The route is about half a mile and takes 45 minutes or so, with some gentle hills. Weekdays during the fall and spring semesters are liveliest, and the heritage center keeps its own hours. If you have extra time, the campus trail system is open to the public. The Georgia Roam app tells each stop's story as you arrive.
