Dalton State College was chartered by the Georgia Board of Regents as Dalton Junior College in 1963 and opened to 524 students in September 1967, fulfilling a long-standing local desire for a college in Whitfield County. County voters had approved a $1.8 million bond issue in 1965 to fund the campus. The word 'Junior' was dropped in 1987, and in 1998 the institution became Dalton State College and was authorized to award bachelor's degrees. It is a unit of the University System of Georgia.
