The Tour
Chartered in 1906 as the Eleventh District Agricultural & Mechanical School, this Douglas campus opened in 1907 and grew into Georgia's first state-supported junior college. Ten buildings from 1907 to 1958 form the Eleventh District A&M School–South Georgia College Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. This walk visits its original 1907 core and early landmarks.
South Georgia State College Campus Tour is a self-guided walking tour of Douglas, built around its campus side.
The walk covers 6 stops over about 0.6 miles and roughly 55 minutes, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.
What you'll see
This walk explores a campus whose early-1900s core survives largely intact, where a district farm school grew into the state's first public junior college. The heart of it is the original 1907 group: a columned academic hall and two brick dormitories by Atlanta architect Haralson Bleckley, set around the curving front drive. More than a century later, they still frame the historic core of campus.
The walk then moves into the college's between-the-wars growth. A 1939 library with a cupola and classical portico carries the name of Joseph M. Thrash, who led the school through its transformation into a college, and a 1930s gymnasium recalls when junior-college sports anchored campus life. A mid-century president's house, now the Alumni House, rounds out the historic district. Ten buildings from 1907 to 1958 are listed together on the National Register.
The route is only about 0.6 miles on level sidewalks, so it takes under an hour. Spring, when the azaleas and crape myrtles bloom, and mild fall mornings are the nicest times to go. The buildings are in daily use by students and staff, so plan to admire them from outside. The Georgia Roam app plays each stop's story as you arrive.
