The Tour

Brewton-Parker College was founded in 1904 in the small town of Mount Vernon, and grew from four wooden buildings into a 280-acre Baptist campus of some forty-six buildings around a five-acre lake. This walk traces the college from its lone surviving founding hall through its chapel, library, student center, and gymnasium.

Brewton-Parker College Campus Tour is a self-guided walking tour of Mount Vernon, built around its campus side.

The walk covers 5 stops over about 0.6 miles and roughly 45 minutes, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.

What you'll see

Brewton-Parker's campus spreads across rural pine country between Mount Vernon and Ailey, and this short walk traces the school's story from a Baptist boarding school for local children to today's university. Its anchor is Gates Hall, the academic building that survives from the school's founding years, when the whole campus was just four buildings. Nearby, a white arch built in the 1930s marks the partnership between the Baptist associations that kept the school alive.

The walk also covers the 1960s, when a building boom gave the campus its library and student center, the setting for daily life at a small residential college. Saliba Chapel explains how worship still shapes the week here, and Gillis Gymnasium introduces the Barons, whose baseball team won the 1997 NAIA World Series. The five-acre lake at the center of campus makes a peaceful place to pause.

The route is about 0.6 miles and takes under an hour on foot. Weekdays during the school year show the campus at its liveliest, while summer mornings are quiet and cooler. It pairs well with a drive through Vidalia onion country nearby. The Georgia Roam app plays each stop's story as you arrive.
