The Tour
The world's largest campus — Gothic halls, a giant waterwheel, and roaming deer. A self-guided Georgia Roam campus tour.
Berry College Campus Tour is a self-guided driving tour of Rome, built around its campus side. It's one of 3 Georgia Roam tours in Rome — each a different route through the city, on your own schedule.
The walk covers 6 stops over about 1.9 miles and roughly 1 hour 8 min, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.
What you'll see
This is a drive through the world's largest college campus, and it feels more like a country estate than a school. Stone halls with Gothic towers rise over reflecting pools, pastures roll off toward Lavender Mountain, and deer graze on the lawns without much interest in passing cars. The centerpiece is the Ford Buildings, the quadrangle that Henry and Clara Ford paid for in the 1920s. It is one of the most photographed spots in Georgia and has stood in for film and TV locations more than once.
Farther out, the route reaches the wooded mountain campus. Here the Old Mill's 42-foot waterwheel, built by students in 1930, still turns on special days. There's also a stone chapel in the trees and a hilltop cottage that students and staff built for Martha Berry in 1922. Closer to the highway, her family home at Oak Hill, with its gardens and museum, shows where the story began: a planter's daughter teaching Sunday school to children who had no school at all.
This tour is made for a car, because the stops are spread across miles of campus roads. Allow an hour or more. Spring and fall are the prettiest seasons, and early morning or late afternoon brings out the deer. The Georgia Roam app tells each stop's story as you arrive.
