History
Berry College was founded by Martha Berry, who in 1902 opened the Boys Industrial School near Rome to provide practical education to rural children of the Southern Appalachians. Under her enduring work-study model, students helped run and maintain the school in exchange for their education. A school for girls was added in 1909, and the institution grew into Berry College, set on roughly 27,000 acres, the largest contiguous college campus in the world. Its landmark English Gothic Ford Buildings were funded by Henry and Clara Ford and completed in the 1920s.
