Waddell Barnes Botanical Gardens

The Waddell Barnes Botanical Gardens spread across the Macon campus of Middle Georgia State University, offering free public access to a landscape of themed planting areas. The gardens date to 1967, when landscape architect Clay Adamson designed the grounds during the construction of the former Macon Junior College, an initial planting that included thousands of trees, shrubs, and ground-cover plants. A later expansion followed a master plan championed by Dr. Waddell Barnes, chair of the college's board of trustees, and the gardens were named in his honor in 2003. Today the campus is organized into roughly sixteen distinct gardens, including Asian, European, medicinal, native-plant, fragrant, and xeriscape sections.
