Its centerpiece is the Dungeness estate, a Gilded Age mansion built by the family of steel magnate Thomas Carnegie in the 1880s that stood until it burned in 1959; its ruins remain a landmark. The island is also famous for its herd of free-roaming feral horses, the only unmanaged wild horse population on the Atlantic coast.
