The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain was fought June 27, 1864, in Cobb County during the Atlanta Campaign, when Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman launched a frontal assault against Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's entrenched Confederate Army of Tennessee. The attack was bloodily repulsed with roughly 3,000 Union casualties to about 1,000 Confederate, one of the few tactical Confederate victories of the campaign, though Sherman soon resumed the flanking maneuvers that drove Johnston toward Atlanta. Congress authorized protection of the ground in 1917, and the National Park Service has administered the roughly 2,965-acre Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park since 1933.
