The Battle of Pine Mountain, fought June 14, 1864, near Marietta during the Atlanta Campaign, is best remembered for the death of Confederate Lt. Gen. Leonidas Polk. As Polk, Joseph E. Johnston, and William J. Hardee reconnoitered Union lines from the mountain's crest, Federal artillery of the 5th Indiana Battery opened fire, and a 3-inch solid shot struck Polk, an Episcopal bishop turned general, killing him instantly. The Confederates soon abandoned the exposed Pine Mountain salient as Sherman's armies pressed toward the Kennesaw line.
