Dorough Cemetery began on farmland that Nathan Smith Dorough acquired in March 1849, roughly three miles outside Cordele and across from Midway Methodist Church. According to family accounts, his wife Harriett Landrum Dorough became the first person laid to rest here in November 1851, buried in a pine-shaded clearing on the property, and their daughter Nancy Ann followed only weeks later. The burial ground grew into a family plot where many Dorough descendants are interred.
