Georgia Gwinnett College was established in 2005 by act of the Georgia General Assembly and opened in August 2006 with 118 students, becoming the first four-year public college created in Georgia in more than a century. Its inaugural president was Daniel J. Kaufman, a retired U.S. Army brigadier general. Set on a 261-acre campus in Lawrenceville, the college serves Gwinnett County and the greater Atlanta area, and its athletic teams are the Grizzlies.
