Andrew College was chartered by the Georgia General Assembly on January 15, 1854, as Andrew Female College, at the time holding the second-oldest charter in the United States granting a college the right to confer degrees on women. It was named for Bishop James Osgood Andrew of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and during the Civil War its buildings were requisitioned as Hood Hospital for Confederate wounded. After a fire destroyed the campus in 1892, townspeople funded the five-story Victorian landmark now called Old Main, designed by Atlanta architect William H. Parkins. Andrew became a junior college in 1917 and turned co-educational in 1956.
