History
Agnes Scott College began in 1889 as the Decatur Female Seminary, launched by Presbyterian minister Frank H. Gaines through his Decatur congregation. In 1890 it was renamed for Agnes Irvine Scott, mother of its principal benefactor, Colonel George Washington Scott, who gave $40,000 to endow the school, and it was chartered under its present name in 1906. Agnes Scott was the first institution of higher education in Georgia to earn regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Its Decatur campus anchors the South Candler Street–Agnes Scott College Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
